  • Phius (rhymes with Prius) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization committed to mitigating and adapting to climate change by reducing carbon emissions from the built environment. Buildings that meet the Phius standard use 40-60 percent less energy for space conditioning than conventional buildings. Phius-certified buildings also provide superb indoor air quality and overall comfort. Phius trains and certifies professionals, maintains the Phius climate-specific passive building standard, certifies and quality assures passive buildings, and conducts research to advance high-performance building.

    We are looking for an experienced non-profit accountant to prepare financial statements, oversee organization’s budgeting and forecasting, and contribute to the financial decision-making processes. This team member will play a key role in projections, planning, and risk assessment. 

    General Responsibilities

    • Ensure compliance with all state and federal financial regulations, laws, and policies
    • Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
    • Support the annual mandatory non-profit audit process in partnership with our bookkeeping firm and auditing firm
    • Export financial reports for monthly, quarterly, and annual review
    • Help create annual budget and monitor monthly expenditures and revenue to track budget on a monthly basis
    • Make state filings (quarterly and annual report to Secretary of State)
    • Meet monthly with Phius Executive Committee to review finances
    • Liaison with Phius Board of Directors finance officer; occasionally attend board meetings
    • Serve on Internal Committee for Phius board

    Ongoing Tasks

    • Liaison with Jitasa, our bookkeeping and accounting firm
    • Execute bi-monthly payroll and 403(b) disbursements
    • Oversee accuracy of all general ledger and subsidiary journals, including cash and credit card receipts, cash disbursements, accounts payable, accounts receivable, revenue releases, payroll accounts, cash flow forecasting
    • Pay monthly credit card bills
    • Process all external client invoices and expenses
    • Deposit checks for Accounts Payable
    • Oversee the Phius Deferred Revenue schedule for building certification
    • Oversee the Phius Alliance Deferred Revenue schedule for memberships
    • Oversee Bill.com activities (approval and coding of invoices) 
    • Oversee reconciliation and coding of all credit card purchases to monthly statements
    • Hold responsibility for PNC Bank accounts for Phius and Phius Alliance
    • Manage and maintain Phius organizational insurance
    • Administer benefit plans to Phius staff for:
    • 403(b) retirement plan
    • Health/vision/dental insurance plans

    Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree in accounting, financial management, or similar.
    • 3+ years of experience working as a non-profit accountant or similar position.
    • Excellent understanding of best non-profit financial and accounting practices, processes, and regulations.
    • Solid knowledge of accounting software; QuickBooks and BILL.com a plus.
    • Practical experience with finance software, Google Suite, and MS Office. CRM experience is a plus.
    • Ability to manage deadlines and work in a high-pressure environment.
    • Display exemplary ethical behavior when working with confidential financial documents.
    • Strong analytical٫ communication and problem-solving skills٫ with close attention to detail.
    • Experience with risk analysis٫ budgeting and forecasting.
    • BS or BA degree in Accounting٫ Finance or another related area; professional certification (such as CPA) or working towards a certification a plus.
