More Renewables, or Improved Envelope? Exploring Paths to Net-Zero Energy in Affordable Housing
When pursuing carbon neutrality for a new affordable housing development, what’s the best approach? More solar panels? An open-loop ground source heat pump system? Or improved building envelope achieved through pursuit of PHIUS+ 2018 standards? These were the questions posed by the Community Action Center of Northfield (CAC) in Minnesota as they work to construct a high quality, long-lasting affordable housing development at the forefront of modern sustainable building practices. The consultant project team will share the results of their study comparing three scenarios: achieving net-zero energy through PHIUS+ 2018 certification compared to standard construction with additional renewable energy or a geothermal system.
